The Newmeyer laboratory does basic research on the phenomenon of "apoptosis". Apoptosis is a process of controlled cell death, through which undesirable or harmful cells are removed from the body. Our research focuses on tiny structures within the cell called mitochondria. For many years, mitochondria have been known to function as "energy factories" that support cell life. In 1993 we discovered that mitochondria also play an essential role in the process of cell death.
